How a simple act of kindness changed many lives

Seven years ago, I was working as a cashier at Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort. Every day, many foreign guests visited the gift shop where I worked. One day, a foreign guest stood quietly looking at a beautifully carved wooden elephant with a baby elephant beside it.

Even today, I clearly remember that unexpected meeting. His name was Chris Quarroz, from Switzerland. During our friendly conversation, I asked where he was traveling next. He said he was heading to Ella and was searching for a vehicle, but the prices offered there were quite high.

Wanting to help, I arranged a reasonably priced rental vehicle and sent my husband as the driver. After the journey, Chris kindly left a tip with his name written on it. Curious about this thoughtful person, we later found his contact details and reached out to thank him. About a week after returning to Switzerland, he called me and shared something remarkable — he wanted to help a children’s home in Sri Lanka and asked for my assistance.

I provided him with photographs and detailed information about a local children’s home. He was deeply moved and promised that he would return to Sri Lanka to support the children personally. True to his word, within ten days, Chris returned to Sri Lanka with his wonderful wife, Fiona, a kind and compassionate woman.

During their stay, they generously purchased and donated everything the children needed. At that time, there were 38 children in the home. They provided clothing, computers, books, school shoes, hygiene supplies, refrigeration equipment, and many other essential items.

At the request of the children’s home management, they were also asked to help construct a second floor to provide better residential facilities for the children. Chris willingly agreed and returned to Switzerland.

As promised, he sent the funds step by step with complete trust and confidence in me. Using high-quality materials and careful supervision, we completed the construction phase by phase. The building was finished to a high standard, including four fully equipped bathrooms with hot water showers.

Later, we furnished the building completely with beds, mattresses, bed sheets, pillows, cupboards, books, tables, chairs, and all necessary essentials. The children were given a safe, comfortable, and fully equipped living space.

This noble act was made possible because of one important thing — trust. Chris trusted me completely to use every rupee for the children. With that trust, we were able to transform a simple promise into a beautiful, meaningful reality.
